Last week four women stepped out in New York city in beautiful designer dresses for the début of the highly anticipated second instalment of Sex and the City the movie.  Just hours later the internet was swarming with terrible reviews.

“This year’s worst release since the BP oil spill, with just as many f***ed-up birds.” said critic Ian Hyland.

Persuaded not to go? Well you shouldn’t be because the majority of bad reviews I have seen have been written by men, and heads up guys… you are not the target audience.

On Saturday night I ventured to Leicester Square to watch the film with some girlfriends and I honestly thought it was great, it had the combination of the real life situations, tear jerking scenes, and laugh out loud moments that we all love.

The film details the lives of these 40 something year olds now they have settled down (bar Samantha who will never settle down). Avid SATC viewers will remember how much Charlotte longed for a child and as you watch her coping with two children pushing her to the limits tears will well up in your eyes as she closes herself in the pantry and breaks down in tears.

It also includes the real life situations the characters find themselves in, it doesn’t play out fairytale love stories but real life situations, yes Carrie does start an argument because on her wedding anniversary her husband buys a television instead of jewellery.  Should we condone the argument, no.  But should we relate to how silly gestures can be blown out of proportion, absolutely.

Lets be honest, this is not the series, the series was down to earth whilst the film starts with the marriage of two long-term characters (Stanford and Anthony) who are about as chalk and cheese as a cow sitting on the White Cliffs of Dover, unrealistic enough for you? Well the ceremony is performed by Liza Minnelli!

The plot is centred around a trip the girls make to Abu Dhabi which has lead to the film being labelled as racist by many critics as the girls form opinions on the Middle Eastern culture.  And I can see why there is a debate into the film’s content as the most controversial scene involves the contents of Samantha’s bag falling onto the ground, including her condoms which offends the local people who are being called to pray at the mosque.

Debates aside if you loved the series then you couldn’t not like this, the situations are more out there and the film is completely unrealistic, but it has Samantha’s offensiveness, Carrie’s heart, Miranda’s realism and Charlotte’s childish spirit.  We can all find a little bit of ourselves in each of the characters and of course dream that we could one day afford the outfits.

So get the ladies together, grab a cosmopolitan, dress up in your finest clobber and indulge in a proper girls night out.
